Western nations share the common ideals of freedom, human rights, open markets, democracy, and rule of the law. What separates the nations from each other is interpretation of these ideals. Condoleezza Rice succinctly verbalizes the American way as, "The American ideal is one of equal opportunity, not equal outcome."

Well put and an easy lens to use as one looks to understand our social services versus those of other more socialistic democracies.

Somehow Ms Rice's statement does not inspire me or seem a metric for assessment or evaluation. Do socialist countires aspire for equal outcomes? How do you judge equal opportunity? Perhaps you need to elaborate on why you find the statement useful. actionable?
